Mac mini: your next car stereo?

posted 11:30 PM UTC in Apple

Well, by now, I should imagine everybody who might be reading this has seen or heard about Apple’s new low-cost computer, the Mac mini. If you haven’t, spend a little time browsing the link; in my mind it’s certainly the most intriguing computer Apple’s introduced in a very long time — not so much for the specs as for the price, and what it signals for the company.

Anyway, there have been plenty of analysis pieces written in the past week about the mini and its place in the computing world; I’m not in the business of pontificating, so I won’t. However, the one story that did catch my eye was from Geekzone, about a market for the mini even Apple probably didn’t expect…

“We had been completing the design and prototypes of our modified iBook and PowerBook car installs when rumors of the Mac Mini began to circulate earlier this month,” said Benzaquen. “We immediately began working on a new design and plan for car conversions on the new Mac Mini platform. We are pleased to be the first to offer the exciting Mac Mini conversion at a price far more accessible than any mobile PC alternative.”

In one of the original Slashdot stories covering the mini’s introduction, someone made the comment that the mini was just about the size of a car radio. Maybe Apple knew what they were doing after all?

Anyway, the mini is likely to end up in all sorts of unusual places, thanks to its small size and price. In fact, it would make a perfect replacement computer for people who were still using, say, a CRT-based iMac DV, hint-hint…

I read the tech specs. Impressed enough to buy one the day its available. It will be interesting to see if it has the same impact the original [skinny] Mac had when it was released.
There are a lot of folks that are tierd of MicroSloth and the Redmond Taliaban.
