Heat leads to storms. Storms lead to power loss. Power loss leads to… suffering!

posted 2:30 AM UTC in General, Media

Seems like just the other day, I was talking about the need to have systems in place to protect critical newspaper-related equipment against electrical failure. Well, those systems came in handy today, as we endured at least three brief power fluctuations at our building. Thankfully, everything worked as expected, although I did end up running extension cables from one of the protected outlets over to a Mac that wasn’t on the backup power system.

Why did the power fail?

102 degrees!

This temperature reading from WeatherPop (circa 2 PM today), combined with a brief but ferocious thunderstorm that swept through the area this evening, may have had something to do with it. All of the local utilities are recording record or near-record amounts of consumption this week, and some may top those records before week’s end.

Tomorrow (i.e., later today) will involve double-checking machines to make sure they survived the loss, and more research on UPSs for home.
