Of course, Mac OS X Hints is one of many Mac sites I read on a daily basis, not just because it’s my job but because I almost always find something handy for my personal use (plus, it’s just plain interesting). Yesterday’s hint regarding client management in Mail.app was a good example; the hint was useful enough, but what really caught my eye was a reference in the comments to two plugins for Apple’s mail program which make it easier to manage vast quantities of email — Mail Act-On and Mail Tags.
According to the respective webpages for each, Mail Act-On basically allows the assignment of keystrokes to specific actions in Mail, such as running a rule or changing the background color of a message. Mail Tags strikes me as the more useful of the pair, as it allows adding specific tags or keywords to a mail message, which can be used as criteria for Spotlight or a smart mailbox. Mail Tags can also set due dates for messages, similar to Outlook’s flag for follow up option, and add notes and priority settings to a message. Pretty neat stuff, if you’re a chronic emailer. (Entourage 2004 added a similar kind of function with its Project Manager.)
Anyway, although I’m not sure I’m going to integrate the two plugins into my Mail.app workflow, it’s still cool to have learned about them. Thanks again, Rob!
